The One With "God Save the Combo ~ Evil Ryu Manifesto"

C/O: lordofultima

Probably one of the most informative, and moreover entertaining, combo demos out on the interwebs currently, this vid has given me a renewed interest in sharpening my chops with Evil Ryu. And I fancy myself much more of a Ryu purist fan, so I give props to lordofultima for turning that around on me...

The One With The Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Trailer

I'm eager to see how this turns out. SFIII is still one of the most exciting competitive fighters today and seeing this game reach the online audience should provide new looks at this play style of game. I am curious how effective "parrying" will be with the inherent lag of online play...

The One With The Street Fighter X Tekken Trailers

Both these trailers KICK ASS!!! I'm particularly excited for the addition of Abel, I think he's a proper addition to the cast of this game as he does strike me as Tekken-like character sometimes.

The gameplay footage looks very much a spiritual successor to the old Rival Schools/Project Justice series with it's tagging system, more so than the obvious association to the Tekken Tag game. I do like the aesthetic coming from this Capcom Production and am looking forward to seeing Namco's approach to their version of this crossover. Street Fighter X Tekken looks to be hitting Xbox, PS3 and PC in 2012 and I can't wait...

The One With Evil Ryu

Evil Ryu is official now for SSFIV:AE. As far as Ryu goes, I'm more of a purist who really appreciates the character as a man seeking enlightenment and battling his inner demons, but I do have to admit...

Evil Ryu looks frikkin' BAD ASS!!!

That wound on his chest looks pretty brutal tho. I guess that kind of trauma can bring out the worst in anyone.

And I submit, that could be one of the meanest looking ultras since... well the Metsu Shoryuken...

The One With The Arcade Goer's POV Video

C/O: GeekinStudio

I like this video. It captures what makes a person who plays fighting games at the arcades different than your regular old run of the mill fighting game player. Online players can play in their pajamas, if they lost no big deal, the other player doesn't know me, he just moves on. But it's another story when you go out into the battlefield of the arcades, look at other players compete, look the other guy in the eye, shake hands for a good game. Much props to the makers of the video for reminding me of that...

The One Where Street Fighter II Turns 20

That's right folks, the OG fighting game turns 20 this month. Let's all take some time to remember where we were when we first picked dropped a quarter in the game, OR picked up a controller.

Where was I? I was at a the 7-Eleven across the street from school. For my 1st pick, I went patriotic and chose Guile...

The One With The Evil Ryu And Oni Akuma Reveal

While the following video is in japanese, it does show some pretty good footage of new additions to the series, SFIII alums, Yun and Yang. The big news is at the end though with the teaser pic of Evil Ryu and Oni Akuma.

C/O: MrWizzu

While I'm not too keen on the additions of the super powered shoto characters, they definitely promise a shift in terms of character balance. And of course a few more awesome ultra combo animations, and I'm all about that...

The One With The 8-Bit Mega-Ryu

Have you ever wondered what it's be like to mix-up Mega Man style graphics with the most awesomest Street Fighter character, Ryu? And then take that product and bring it to the real world? Probably not, but that didn't stop this guy from making an cool video about it. Also, stick around for the 2nd half of the vid. He's got a dog that throws him off his game.

Mad props going out to SpeedBrkr for the cool character design, and to Swoozie for building that kick ass Ryu wood sculpture...

The One With The Super Street Fighter IV Announcment

You read correctly, a new iteration of the fighting game juggernaut known as Street Fighter is getting a full update.

EIGHT new characters on a new stand alone disc, not a DLC update. So far they've confirmed the additions of T. Hawk, Deejay and a new female fighter named Juri. Grab some more info here, but I'd brush up on your Japanese before checking it out. Otherwise, check just about every other gaming news site online today. I know I'll be glued to the internet for more info...

The One With My "Amazing" Video

In an effort to become more versed in forms of digital media, I've been experimenting with editing clips together to make fan videos. This particular video is my attempt at a fan vid/character study of my favorite video game character of all time, Ryu from Street Fighter. Hope you enjoy.

C/O: Me

(Of course, one day after I posted the final cut of this on Youtube, Kanye pulls some outlandish shenanigans at the VMA's)

The video was lifted from Street Fighter™: Round One – Fight!, a product Capcom put out taking the art from the Udon comic book series a couple years back and putting into a motion comic. A lot of the animation was already in the video, but the transitions and editing are mine. The story in the comic is much different the what I portray in the video, but that's the magic of video editing for you.

Ryu is a character that's always striving to better himself through the martial arts, I believe that is noble goal...

This video by Maj was featured at EVO 2K9.

C/O: DogfaceShow

The video can be downloaded here.

Featuring my favorite Street Fighter character ever, I'm already predisposed to loving this video, but I gotta say there are some pretty amazing combos demonstrated here. Plus, the transitions from scene to scene are clever. I give it 5 stars...

The One With The 2009 EVO SFIV Champion

After watching a full weekend of live streaming EVO footage this weekend, viewing dozens of intense Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, and Street Fighter IV matches, I can say that it was well worth the effort, because I've seen some amazing matches by the best competitors in the world. And the Main Event, the Street Fighter IV Championship Finals were AMAZING. The true 1st SFIV world champion is Daigo Umehara. That's right, "The Beast" prevailed as the winner but not after a long fought, and nail-biting finals, where Daigo faced the USA favorite repping the NYC, Justin Wong, a man who had already earned a SFIII title earlier that morning and fought a hard battle to earn runner-up in the Marvel vs Capcom 2 championship.

The two competitors faced in three different sets in the double elimination tournament. Both began in the winners bracket and actually matched up during the 1st round (best of 3 matches, best of 3 rounds), where Justin, who had seemed to favor Rufus in competition since the game came out, made a strategic decision to change gears and chose Abel instead. Justin showed some fancy work with Abel, countering a fireball with and ultra in one of the rounds, but was ultimately beaten by the patient and focused Daigo and his near flawless execution with Ryu.

Daigo would go on to sweep the rest of the winners bracket. Justin, now in the losers bracket, had shown great concentration by having to defeat three Akuma players to sweep the bracket and earn another chance at Daigo and the SFIV title.

Because Daigo had beaten Justin previously, Justin would have to beat Daigo in two sets (now a best of 5 matches, best of 3 rounds for the championship set). Justin started after Daigo with Abel once again, but after a firm trouncing, searched deep inside to decide on Balrog a.k.a. in international competition "Boxer". Justin, with the home crowd behind him edges out Daigo in this 2nd set, after going the full 5 matches, and the spectators in the crowd GO NUTS! The level of play was top notch, and it was clear Justin had surprised Daigo with his strategy. But the celebration was brief as the two players had to continue on to the 3rd set immediately. No break.

Let me tell you this set also went the distance. Both players kept with the same characters the entire set and the back and forth between these them was fierce. The chess match was on and the tension was thick. The crowd's excitement ebbed and flowed as the rounds progressed. Daigo took first match, then Justin would take the next two, and then Daigo nabbed his second match. These guys took it down to the wire, but I gotta say, something about Daigo's play had changed since the beginning of the set. I'd describe it as like a man possessed. That final round of the third match cemented that Daigo had finally adapted to Justin's game.

That said though, a wonderful effort by both competitors. Justin played an incredible game. And Daigo is my hero...

The One With The Cool SFIV Shirt

Found this shirt design on one of the more cooler sites I visit out on the interwebs, Kineda. Due to their love of the best damn fighting game series ever, they've created their own set of SFIV themed shirts.

I'm fond of this one myself for both it's style and factual proclamation.

Additional designs and ordering info can be found here.

The One About "The Beast"

This guy is Umehara Daigo aka The Beast. "Why is this unassuming asian guy called that?", you ask. He earned that name by becoming one of the most dominant Street Fighter players/competitors in the world. I've seen this guy live in action and it is inspiring. He makes the best players in competition look like scrubs.

This vid is the championship match where Daigo became the 1st SFIV World Champ, in San Francisco, CA.

Justin Wong, Daigo's challenger in the vid, was crowned the US Champ earlier that night, no slouch by any means, and Daigo made short work of him. All in all though, I give props to both guys, they gave a hell of a show.

In the July issue of the Japanese mag, Arcadia there's a six page interview with Daigo where they ask him about his recent victory. Excerpts can be found here. It's an interesting read for folks like myself who are really into the fighting genre. I think I might read it twice...

The One With Some Crazy Combos
